A column of cloud by day and a column of cloud by night is how Jehovah-God continually reminded the people of Israel of His presence during the wilderness wanderings.  No doubt this reminder was also a means of protection for the camp, for who would dare attack a people with such a presence?  Centuries later Jesus declared Himself to be that light for His followers today.
